HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team had seven different players score a goal en route to tying a Division I school record with an 8-0 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon.

The game was actually shortened due to rain showers as play was called in the 74th minute.

The eight goals tied a Division I record for the most goals the Owls have scored in a single game since becoming a member of Division I in 2005. The other time KSU put eight in the back of the net was also against Alabama A&M on Aug. 24, 2008.

KSU opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play as senior Brittany Vining found classmate Alyssa Mahan just inside the box. Mahan took a touch and blasted a shot that beat Alabama A&M goalkeeper Linda Aboagye on her left side. Vining’s assist put her in sole possession of ninth place on the all-time Kennesaw State assist list as she now has 18 for her career.

Redshirt-freshman Katrina Frost made the score 2-0 in the 23rd minute as she scored her second goal in as many games. Frost once again scored from distance as she took a shot from 20 yards out that snuck in just under the crossbar.

Mahan and Vining teamed up again in the 26th minute except their roles were reversed this time as Vining took a cross from Mahan and deflected the ball in from six yards out to give Kennesaw State a 3-0 lead.

The Owls made it 4-0 in the 30th minute as senior Shelby Cosby was taken down inside the box as she was going towards goal. As a result KSU was awarded a penalty kick in which sophomore Kelsey Barr calmly stepped up and put home the first goal of her collegiate career.

Kennesaw State continued its offensive assault in the second half as it was awarded another penalty kick in the 60th minute. Vining beat her defender and was streaking down the left side when she was aggressively taken down on a hard slide tackle inside the box. This time it was redshirt-freshman Jewelia Strickland who took the PK and like Barr calmly scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

Cosby and Mahan pushed KSU’s lead to 7-0 as they added two more goals in the 62nd and 72nd minutes. Mahan finished the afternoon with six points as she became the first Kennesaw State player to record six points in a game since Rachel Baer on Oct. 5, 2008 against North Florida.

Freshman Julia Nelson became the third player to score her first collegiate goal in the match as she capped off the Black and Gold’s scoring in the 74th minute.

Senior Katie Scott also recorded two assists in the win.

“I was pleased with today’s performance,” head coach Rob King said. “We implemented several changes following the disappointing result at Alabama on Friday night. We controlled the game from the first whistle and again started numerous freshmen in key positions. We still have a lot to work on in practice this week and we expect to be much improved by our home opener against the College of Charleston on Friday.”

Kennesaw State outshot Alabama A&M 21-3 in the game, and they also held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Black and Gold’s next match will be its 2011 home opener on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. against the College of Charleston.
