KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team set yet another program record on Saturday evening as that has been a common trend for the Owls this season. They are also showing no signs of slowing down as they cruised past Lipscomb, 7-0, at the Whitworth Racquet Club.
The win extends the Black and Gold’s best start in program history to 11-2, and it also gives them their best-ever start to conference play at 2-0. The Owls have never started 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference since they joined the league back in 2005.
“It feels good to get into conference play, and I really liked what I saw out of our players today,” head coach
Jeffery Kutac said. “Tess and Agatha really fought hard to come back from a 5-2 hole and win their match at the No. 2 doubles spot, and Alex really showed some maturity and heart in coming back to win her first set, and then the match, at the No. 3 singles position.”
The victory also officially marked the end of the first weekend of A-Sun conference play, but some impressive winning streaks were kept alive on Saturday.
Junior
Vera Shkundina beat Lipscomb’s Elizabeth Keevil 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to run her singles streak to 11 in a row. Shkundina dropped only three games in two singles matches on the weekend, and she now hasn’t lost in singles action in well over a month.
Sophomore
Therese Lagerkvist kept her singles streak intact as well as she won 6-0, 6-1 over Carlina Jow at the No. 5 position. Lagerkvist now has an eight-match A-Sun singles winning streak dating back to last season.
Lastly, the doubles team of junior
Morgan Carney and freshman
Alexandra Apostu ran their streak for perfection to 10-0 winning 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Kennesaw State will stay on the road for its final match of its three-match Tennessee road trip on Monday, Mar. 7 against Austin Peay, who is the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champions. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (CT).
