KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought Atlantic Sun Conference match to Lipscomb, 5-2, on Saturday night at Richland Country Club.
The loss drops the Owls to 6-5, 1-1 A-Sun on the year, while the win improves the Bisons to 5-4, 2-0 A-Sun for the season.
“We played some absolutely amazing, and inspired, doubles to start the match,” head coach #T.J. Greggs# said. “Unfortunately, we had a few players who didn't bring that energy with them to singles, and it cost us the match. We got outhustled and outplayed tonight. It's disappointing to drop the match, especially when not everyone seemed to give their all in the singles. We have to stop waiting until we're down a set to start trying. We'll learn from this loss and move forward.”
Doubles play has been a bright spot for the Black and Gold all season and Saturday was no exception. After dropping the match at the No. 1 spot to fall behind, the team of
Michael Langel and
Tyler Mills tied the doubles matches at 1-1 with a thrilling 8-6 win at the No. 3 position. The No. 2 doubles team of
Elliot Kahler and
Simon Janik pulled away late in their match to win 8-4, and give the Owls the doubles point.
Kennesaw State now has an impressive doubles winning percentage of .727, compared to just a .403 percentage last season.
However, the Owls couldn’t keep the momentum going as they dropped five of the six singles matches. The lone singles win came from freshman
Ryan Spencer at the No. 6 spot as he won in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 1-0.
Kennesaw State will now travel to Clarksville, Tenn. to take on Austin Peay on Monday, Mar. 7. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (CT).
