Kennesaw State Hosts A Pair Of A-Sun Foes This Weekend

Owls look to break school record for most overall wins in a season

KENNESAW, Ga. – With only three weeks standing between the Kennesaw State women’s tennis team, and its second-consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament appearance, every match now becomes critical from here on out. This weekend’s matches couldn’t make that statement any more accurate as the Owls will host Campbell, who is currently a half-game ahead of the Black and Gold in the conference standings, and USC Upstate.

The Owls (15-4, 4-2 A-Sun) are coming off a solid 2-1 week as they split with the two A-Sun River City schools last weekend. The Black and Gold also polished off their non-conference schedule on Monday by defeating Wright State, 7-0, to post an 11-2 mark in non-conference play for the season.

Singles play continues to be a strength for the Owls this season as they have won 72 percent (82-32) of their singles matches. Junior Morgan Carney has been on fire as of late as she is riding a six-match singles winning streak, and she is also undefeated in the A-Sun at 5-0.

Kennesaw State is out for revenge on Friday as Campbell knocked it out of the 2010 A-Sun Tournament with a 4-2 loss, while USC Upstate also handed the Owls a tough 4-3 loss on Feb. 19 last season.

Campbell enters this weekend with a record of 8-5 (4-1 A-Sun) with its lone conference loss coming against East Tennessee State on Mar. 18. The Camels were picked to finish fifth in the A-Sun Preseason Poll. USC Upstate comes into the weekend with a mark of 0-12 (0-5 A-Sun).

The Black and Gold will be looking to make school history this weekend as well as they look to eclipse the program record for most overall wins in a single season. Since the program was established back in 1992 the record for most overall wins in a season is 16 by the 1993 and 1994 teams who played in the NAIA.

First serve for Friday’s match against Campbell is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta.
