KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team fell for just the second time this season as it dropped a tough non-conference matchup to UAB, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Lake Shore Tennis Center in Birmingham, Ala.
The loss drops the Owls to 9-2 for the season, while the win improves the Blazers to 2-3 on the year.
Both teams came out very determined in doubles play as neither squad wanted to give up that all important doubles point. The Black and Gold lost at the No. 2 doubles spot, but the No. 3 doubles team of freshman
Alexandra Apostu and junior
Morgan Carney came right back with a 8-3 win to tie the doubles matches at 1-1.
Unfortunately, the Owls wound up losing the doubles point as the No. 1 doubles team of junior
Vera Shkundina and sophomore
Iesha Holton lost in a very close 9-7 match.
Apostu’s streak came to an end in singles play as she dropped a tough opening set to Paula Alvarez, 7-5. The freshman couldn’t recover after losing the first set as she fell in the second set 6-0. The 18-match winning streak was the longest streak in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season.
The lone singles win of the afternoon came at the No. 1 spot for the Owls as Shkundina continued her excellent play. She took down UAB’s Giorgia Romeo 7-5, 7-6 as she has now won 15 of her last 16 overall singles matches dating back to last season.
The Owls will now begin preparations for conference play as they will take on Belmont in their A-Sun opener on Mar. 4 in Nashville, Tenn.
