Alexandra Apostu extended her winning streak to 14 matches but it wasn’t enough as the Kennesaw State women’s tennis team suffered defeat for the first time this season with a 4-3 loss to Coastal Carolina on Friday evening.
The loss ends the Owls seven-match season opening winning streak as they are now 7-1 on the year, while Coastal Carolina moves to 2-1. The match was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Kennesaw State dropped two of the three doubles matches to Coastal Carolina to lose the doubles point for the first time all season. The Black and Gold’s lone win came at the No. 3 position as Apostu and junior
Morgan Carney won, 8-6. The duo is now 5-0 on the year.
In singles action, the Owls lost the first two singles match to fall behind 3-0.
The match that sealed Kennesaw State’s fate came at the No. 6 spot as Carney lost the first set to Maria Hesketh, 2-6, but rebounded strong to win the second set, 6-2. Unfortunately, Carney couldn’t complete the comeback falling 2-6 in the third set.
With the match in hand the Black and Gold didn’t stop fighting as they wound up winning the final three singles matches to keep some other impressive streaks alive.
Sophomore
Therese Lagerkvist won a three-set match at the No. 5 position to push her singles winning streak to six straight.
Junior
Vera Shkundina wore her opponent down at the No. 1 spot to win in straight sets for her seventh straight singles victory.
Lastly, Apostu won 6-4, 6-3 over Coastal Carolina’s Kourtney Kowal at the No. 3 position to keep her streak alive winning 14 straight overall matches.
The Owls look to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they will host an All-Georgia doubleheader. Kennesaw State will play Georgia Southern (2-0) at 10 a.m., and then take on Savannah State (1-0) at 4 p.m. The matches will be played at the Laurel Park Tennis Center.
