KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State's volleyball team will wrap up the 2011 regular season today as it takes on in-state rival Mercer in an Atlantic Sun Conference match. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center.
The Owls (12-15, 7-5) have already secured a berth into the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships next week in Nashville, Tenn. By virtue of last night's results in conference play, they also know that they will be facing East Tennessee State in the quarterfinal match as the Bucs earned a, 3-2, home win last night over Lipscomb.
Still, there is a lot to play for Saturday in the late afternoon. The Owls can finish conference play with a winning home record with a victory over the Bears. The Owls can also finish the season with a winning record if they win today's match, then win the conference tournament next weekend.
Also, there's the point of pride of wanting to send the senior class of Rachael Albright, Holly Knight, Alyssa Lang, and Justine Young out as winners. "Our seniors have continued to work very hard on and off the court to provide leadership to our underclassmen," said KSU head coach Karen Weatherington. "It's only right that we all put out our best effort to make sure they walk out of here as winners today, because they're going to be winners in whatever they do beyond volleyball."
Mercer (12-18, 4-8) is just one match behind Jacksonville for the sixth seed in the A-Sun Championships. The Bears are currently tied with North Florida for seventh in the standings.
First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m., with Senior Day festivities scheduled to preceed first serve.
ASun.TV will provide full coverage of the event.
