KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team is set to close out its 2011 regular-season home schedule in what figures to be an emotional day at KSU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Owls host Florida Gulf Coast on Senior Day.
Sunday marks the final regular-season home match for the seven seniors of the 2011 senior class.
Shelby Cosby,
Alyssa Mahan,
Kristin Marietta,
Lauren Ruffini,
Katie Schwartz,
Katie Scott and
Brittany Vining will all be honored before the match. The 2011 senior class has won 36 games in its four years at KSU, and they were all part of the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championship team.
Looking past the emotional aspects of Sunday’s match the Owls must focus their attention to yet another crucial A-Sun matchup against FGCU. Postseason seeding is starting to become a factor now that KSU is entering the final stages of its season as the Owls are currently tied with North Florida and Lipscomb for the number five seed with three matches remaining after Sunday.
Kennesaw State (6-6-1, 2-3 A-Sun) is looking to secure its first conference weekend sweep of the season as it took care of business against Stetson on Friday night with a 2-0 win. The Black and Gold outshot the Hatters 23-8, and got two second half goals by Vining and sophomore
Kelsey Barr.
Vining’s goal moved her into a tie with Maria Rubert for ninth on the all-time Kennesaw State goals list with 13 goals for her career. The Fayetteville, Ga. native also passed assistant coach
Rebecca Nolin on the KSU points list as she is now in tenth all-time with 44 points.
Scoring the first goal of the match could prove to be vital in Sunday’s matchup as Kennesaw State and FGCU are both 6-0-0 for the season when they score first.
The Owls have an all-time record of 1-2-1 against Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles have won each of the last two meetings between the two schools by a score of 1-0.
Florida Gulf Coast (8-3-2, 3-0-1 A-Sun) is coming off a 1-0 win over Mercer on Friday night. The Eagles return seven starters from a team that was the A-Sun Regular Season Champions with a record of 11-4-2. Florida Gulf Coast was picked as the preseason favorite in the A-Sun Preseason Poll, and it is led by goalkeeper Stephanie Powers who leads the conference in shutouts with seven.
The match is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m., but pregame senior ceremonies will start at 12:45 p.m.
