KENNESAW, Ga. - Alyssa Lang's 11 kills were a match-high, while Baylee Strachan scored 15.5 points on the strength of 10 kills and four aces as the Kennesaw State volleyball team defeated Stetson, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-15), in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the KSU Convocation Center.
"We had a solid, all-around effort tonight," said KSU head coach Karen Weatherington. "We were able to use our service game to keep Stetson out of sync, and we got some very solid performances all over the court to enable us to get the win."
The Owls (8-12, 3-2) won their third straight A-Sun match by playing a patient, consistent style. Three consecutive hitting errors gave Stetson (4-11, 0-4) the first three points of the match, but the Owls responded by committing just one error the rest of the way. A 10-0 run on the serve of Strachan enabled the Owls to pull away for a, 20-8 lead. Justine Young was on fire in the first set, racking up eight kills, including the final two for KSU, as the Owls won set one, 25-10.
Set two was more of the same, as the Owls scored nine points off of the serve of Rachael Albright. The Palm City, Fla., senior had three aces in the set, while Lang recorded six of her kills in the middle frame to give the Owls a dominant victory, 25-12.
While the third set was more competitive, the Owls were able to break open a 10-10 tie with four consecutive points. Emily Bean racked up a kill in a run that was helped by Stetson miscues. Two points away from the match, Lang notched her only two aces of the night as the Owls closed out the Hatters, 25-15.
Sara Metroka had 36 assists to raise her average in conference matches to 11.55 per set. Camille Pedraza had 16 digs as the Owls had 22 more as a team than the Hatters (52-30). Young joined Lang and Strachan in double-digits in kills with 10.
Kaley Melville and Ellen Hawks each had four kills to lead the Hatters.
The Owls will be back in action Saturday at 3 p.m. as they play host to Florida Gulf Coast. FGCU survived a scare from Mercer Friday night, defeating the Bears in five sets to stay undefeated in A-Sun play.
