Northern Illinois sweeps KSU in UIC Invitational opener

CHICAGO - Sabrita Gulley had 11 kills but it was not enough as the Kennesaw State volleyball team fell, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18), to Northern Illinois in the first match of the UIC Invitational.

The Owls tied the first set three times, including at 20-20, but in the end, Northern Illinois (6-0) used a 4-0 spurt to open a 24-20 advantage en route to the first set.

In set two, the Huskies opened up a 7-1 lead, and while Kennesaw State would rally within three at 14-11, NIU would surge ahead, scoring 11 of the final 16 points to take the set 25-16.

In the finale, the Owls fought hard, but the Huskies pulled away to take the set, 25-18.  For the match, the Huskies hit .344, with six players hitting at least .400.

Gulley fell just short of a double-double, digging up nine NIU attacks to go with her 11 kills.  Rachael Albright led the Owls setters with 15 assists.

KSU will be back in action Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CDT when they face Illinois-Chicago.
