Troy Tops Coastal Carolina

Service game propels Trojans to win

9/17/2010 2:32:41 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - Natasha Kolunija had a match-high 11 kills while Kayla Giles and Caroline Alexander each had three service aces as Troy defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-19) in the second match of the 2010 Owls Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State.

The Trojans (5-8) kept Coastal Carolina off-balance for most of the match with sharp serves.  Alexander had her three aces in the opening set as Troy built a big lead early.  Troy only recorded nine kills in the set, but Coastal Carolina hit for a .000 attack percentage (7 kills/7 errors) to enable the Trojans to take the win.

The second set was more of the same as the Trojans had 15 kills and just three errors in the set on the offensive front.  Coastal hit at a .061 clip as the Chanticleers (5-6) struggled to find an offensive flow.

In the finale, the two teams battled in a tight set until the Trojans stretched the lead out at the end of the frame.  Coastal had a match-best 13 kills in the third set, but nine attack errors, compared to just three for Troy, proved to be the undoing of the Chanticleers.

Chelsy Kimes had eight kills to lead Coastal.

Troy is idle in the Invitational until Saturday at noon when they face the host Owls.  Coastal Carolina will play its next match against KSU at 7 p.m. this evening
