KENNESAW, Ga. - In a match that could prove to be a harbinger of things to come, the Kennesaw State volleyball team will travel to Jacksonville, Ala., to face Jacksonville State Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Owls (2-1) are coming off a solid performance at the Southern Miss/LaQuinta Inn Invitational last weekend. KSU swept Nicholls State and South Alabama before falling, 3-0, to the host Golden Eagles in a match where two of the sets went extra points. Sabrita Gulley averaged 5.11 kills per set while Turea Jones averaged 5.44 digs per set, a mark which currently leads the Atlantic Sun Conference. Gulley and freshman setter Sara Metroka were both named to the all-tournament team.
Jacksonville State went 1-2 at the Belmont Invitational, facing a pair of schools the Owls will face later this season. In their season opener, the Gamecocks defeated Memphis in four sets. After a 3-0 loss to Miami of Ohio, JSU was swept at the hands of Belmont, 3-0. This weekend, KSU will face Memphis at the UIC Invitational in Chicago. During the first weekend of October, the Owls will face Belmont in Nashville to open A-Sun play.
KSU and Jacksonville State have never met on the volleyball court. The two schools are separated by just 89 miles of road, a closer drive than the distance between KSU and any of its A-Sun rivals, including in-state foe Mercer.
