KENNESAW, Ga. – Fresh off clinching a berth in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament for the fifth consecutive season the Kennesaw State women’s soccer team will now be looking to improve its seeding in the tournament as it will host East Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon.
As it stands heading into Sunday afternoon the seeding for this year’s tournament is very wide open. The Owls can finish as high as the number two seed which would mean a first round bye, or they can finish as low as the number six seed which would put them on the road for a first round match.
The Black and Gold played itself into the tournament with a 2-0 win over USC Upstate on Friday night.
Kennesaw State (8-6-1, 5-3 A-Sun) opened the scoring in the 49th minute with
Alma Gardarsdottir scoring a goal off a well-taken corner kick by
Alyssa Mahan to give them a 1-0 lead. The Owls put the game out of reach in the 80th minute as a trio of juniors combined for the goal with
Kristin Kranick and
Katie Schwartz starting it off and
Brittany Vining finishing.
Gardarsdottir now leads the team with five goals on the year, while Mahan has recorded a point in six of the Owls eight A-Sun Conference matches this season. The Black and Gold were very aggressive on the offensive end registering 22 shots which is the second highest total in a single game this season.
Head Coach Rob King likes what he sees from his team as of late.
“We are looking to continue building on our recent performances. We’re defending well as a team, and getting goals when we need them.”
With all of the tournament seeding questions looming Coach King’s squad look to take it one match at a time as up next for the Owls is East Tennessee State.
East Tennessee State (7-7-1, 3-5 A-Sun) was picked to finish eighth in the A-Sun Preseason Poll and are coming off a 5-13-0 record last season. Under 12-year head coach Heather Henson, the Buccaneers return eight starters. ETSU is led by Ramey Kerns who leads the team with six goals and 13 points. East Tennessee State is coming off a 3-0 loss to Mercer on Friday night.
The Owls are 4-2 all-time against the Buccaneers, and 7-1 this season when they score the first goal of the match.
Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
