KENNESAW, Ga. – Standing atop the Atlantic Sun Conference standings right now with a win over Mercer, the women’s soccer team returns to A-Sun action when they host Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast this weekend at the KSU Soccer Complex.
While inclement weather and poor field conditions saw last weekend’s games cut in half, the Owls enter this weekend on a two-match winning streak. After rain cancelled Friday’s match with Samford, the Owls (3-3-0, 1-0-0 A-Sun) are coming off a, 6-0, win over Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls had their biggest offensive output of the season on Sunday as they managed two first half goals from freshman Jade Dempster and red-shirt senior Caitlin Dingle, before putting the match out of reach with four second half goals from Katie Scott, Kristin Kranick, Liz Blackburn and Dingle.
Kennesaw State’s Alyssa Mahan leads the A-Sun in assists per game with a 0.50 mark Mahan has three assists in six games. Dempster, who has made a mark as one of the top rookies in the conference, netted her second game-winning goal of the season on Sunday as she is currently ranked second in the conference in that category.
Stetson (4-4-0, 0-0-0 A-Sun) plays their A-Sun opener on Friday evening and is led by star Tessa Gavilsky. The junior forward was last year’s conference Player-of-the-Year and led the A-Sun with 16 goals. Currently, she remains one of the A-Sun’s top offensive threats as she is second in the conference in goals and points.
The Hatters saw their modest two-match winning streak come to an end with a, 3-2, double overtime loss to South Florida. Stetson had defeated Jacksonville State and Tennessee-Martin, both by 1-0 scores for their second two-match winning streak of the year. Stetson, with the help of goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia, has posted shutouts in all four of its wins this season.
After falling, 3-2, last season to Stetson, the Owls are looking to get back in the win column against the Hatters. The Black and Gold hold an advantage in the all-time series, owning a 2-1-1 overall mark against Stetson.
Florida Gulf Coast (5-3-1, 0-0-0 A-Sun), who is always a threat in the conference, opens the conference season on Friday against Mercer before facing the Owls on Sunday afternoon. Kennesaw State is undefeated against the Eagles all-time, holding a 1-0-1 advantage in the series.
The Eagles are led on offense by freshman Jessica Swartzentruber who has scored three goals on the season. Defensively, goalkeeper Stephanie Powers, an A-Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week recipient this season, has posted 30 saves on the year.
FGCU enters the match on a hot streak, having won five of six matches. The Eagles reeled off five consecutive wins, outscoring their opponents by a 10-1 score, before seeing their winning streak snapped with a, 1-0, defeat at the hands of Mississippi State.
The Owls will take on Stetson on Friday, Sept. 25 with kick-off at 7:00 p.m. and will play Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Sept. 27 with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Complex.
