KENNESAW, Ga. - Due to a conflict at the KSU Convocation Center, in addition to torrential rains and flooding in the Cobb County area, the Kennesaw State volleyball team will take on metro Atlanta rival Georgia State at the Georgia State Sports Arena Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Admission will be free for all patrons.
"This is a very unique situation for us," said KSU head coach Karen Weatherington. "We're grateful that Georgia State has been flexible in working with us on this matter."
The match was originally scheduled for the Convocation Center, but was forced to be moved due to a scheduling conflict with an event planned for the arena floor. The match was then moved to North Cobb High School; however, with Cobb County schools now closed Tuesday, North Cobb High is no longer an option for the match. In addition, the Convocation Center floor has already been prepared for the Tuesday event that was scheduled to take place instead of the volleyball match. Further, KSU is offically closed for Tuesday after a Monday which saw upwards of five inches fall on the KSU campus, causing flooding in some buildings and parking decks, in addition to streets around the campus.
If Georgia State University is closed Tuesday, or if conditions warrant that Kennesaw State cannot safely travel to Atlanta for the match, the match will be postponed.
The two teams have shared a tournament championship this season. KSU won the Kennesaw State pool of the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge Presented by Residence Inn - Kennesaw, defeating Rider, Alabama A&M, and Nicholls State. GSU won the Georgia State pool, topping North Carolina A&T, Louisiana-Monroe, and Presbyterian. Asjia Stokes of KSU and Ashley Jones of GSU were named Co-MVPs of the event.
The Owls (7-3) will enter after dropping two Atlantic Sun Conference matches at home over the weekend. KSU fell 3-2 to East Tennessee State Friday night, then dropped a 3-1 decision to Campbell Saturday afternoon.
Sabrita Gulley set the KSU record for kills in a match with 24 Friday night. She followed that performance with a 21 kill effort Saturday.
Georgia State (11-3) won the Elon Invitational over the weekend, defeating the host Phoenix, Navy, and Norfolk State. Jones leads GSU with 3.06 kills per set.
Following Tuesday's match, the Owls will jump back into A-Sun play, traveling to Nashville to face Belmont and Lipscomb this weekend.
