KENNESAW, Ga. – In its final match of the regular season, the Kennesaw State soccer team will host Campbell on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Complex. Saturday night will also be Senior Night, as Maylee Attin-Johnson, Caitlin Dingle and Bridget Gaughan will be honored prior to the game.
Campbell enters the weekend with a 4-3-2 Atlantic Sun Conference record and is currently tied for fifth place in the conference with Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. The Camels are led by Olga Ekblom who has five goals and two assists for a total for 12 points. Right behind her is Marissa Muller who has four goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Jamie Panfil has 61 saves on the year and has played in 16 matches for the Camels.
The Camels have had an up-and-down conference season that saw them tie North Florida and Jacksonville in their first two games, then win three straight against USC Upstate, ETSU and Florida Gulf Coast. The Camels then lost the next two games to Stetson and Belmont before defeating Lipscomb. Most recently, Campbell fell, 5-0, to Mercer.
The Owls enter the weekend 6-3-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference action and currently reside in first place. However, the regular season championship is still up for grabs. After Mercer’s pasting of Campbell on Thursday evening, the Owls still remain in first place in the standings, but a meeting between Belmont and Jacksonville this evening could possibly determine the conference’s regular season champion.
Kennesaw State could win the A-Sun regular season title if it beats Campbell on Saturday evening, Jacksonville ties Belmont on Friday and both JU and Belmont win their final games on Sunday against Lipscomb and North Florida, respectively. If that happens, Kennesaw State would finish the season tied with the Bruins, with the Owls claiming the regular season crown via a win over Belmont.
Two wins by either Jacksonville or Belmont would give one of those two teams the title; the Bruins and the Dolphins play on Friday evening with the winner having the advantage in claiming the regular season title.
The Owls hold a one-point lead over Belmont, but the Bruins have a game in hand entering this weekend. A pair of wins by the Bruins would give them the crown over the Owls, even if KSU beats Campbell on Saturday.
Should Jacksonville win both their games against Belmont and Lipscomb this weekend they would be the regular season champions since they own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Kennesaw State after defeating the Owls earlier in the season.
Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast each have 14 points and could win the conference with weekend sweeps, but they would need help from a number of other teams. Both squads play ETSU and USC Upstate at home with both teams being eliminated from first-place contention with a Kennesaw State win. Two Jacksonville wins and one Belmont win would also eliminate both teams.
