The women’s tennis program is riding at an all-time high as they are coming off arguably its best season in program history. The Black and Gold went 18-6 (7-3 A-Sun) in 2011, and in the process set new program records for most overall and conference wins in a single season.
The Owls finished the season with a +6 overall wins improvement from 2010 (12) to 2011 (18). This marks the most drastic change in overall wins by a team in back-to-back seasons in the A-Sun since Jacksonville went +9 (10 to 19) in the 2006-07 seasons. Also, KSU's 18 overall wins in 2011 was the most by any team in the conference.
The Black and Gold have no intentions of slowing down this season either as they return their top two singles players in three-time, all-conference selection Vera Shkundina and all-freshman honoree Alexandra Apostu. The two combined for a singles record of 34-10 last season, and they are one of the best 1-2 punches in the league.
The women’s tennis team has qualified for the A-Sun Conference Tournament in each of its past two seasons, and 2012 should be no different as the Owls have the pieces in place to make a historic run in the championship.
