Derrick Atkins

Derrick Atkins enters his third season as the Sprint and Relays coach at Kennesaw State University. He is a nationally certified coach, holding a USTFCCCA Sprints/Hurdles/Jumps and Relays Specialist.
 
During his time coaching at Kennesaw State, he has been a part of four Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Atlantic Sun Championships and the first two Women’s Indoor and Outdoor ASUN Championships as well. He has coached eight ASUN Individual Champions, 15 All ASUN Conference athletes and five athletes who reached the NCAA Championships.
 
In 2017, Atkins coached Hannah Wood to two school records 7.48 (60m) and 11.48 (100m). In Hannah’s Senior year she was a NCAA Championships Preliminary Round qualifier in the 100m.  He also coached the Woman’s 4 x 100m relay to a NCAA Championships Preliminary round.
 
During his distinguished athletic career, Atkins was a semifinalist in the 100m in both Beijing (2008) and London (2012) Summer Olympics for His native country of the Bahamas. He has competed in three World Track and Field Championships, one of which he won a Silver Medal in the 100m clocking a blistering time of 9.91 which stands today as the Bahamas National Record. 
 
In 2016 Atkins was Inducted in the Dickinson State University (N.D) Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2013 NAIA Hall of Fame inductee in the athlete category, excelled in both indoor and outdoor track and field for four years at Dickinson State University (N.D.).  He has indoor and outdoor conference sprint records that are still standing, and he led his team to four Dakota Athletic Conference championships.  Atkins is a seven-time N.A.I.A National champion and he won national titles in the 55m, 100 meters and 200m in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Also, he is a 15 time All-American in the sprints and relays. Atkins led Dickinson State to two consecutive N.A.I.A National Outdoor Championships in 2004 and 2005 and to a runner-up finish in 2003.
