Former Memphis Tiger standout Alex Winchell joined the Kennesaw State women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach on July 17, 2019 and finished her first season with the program in the spring of 2020.
Winchell comes to Kennesaw State from the University of Memphis, where she spent two seasons as the video coordinator before being named the director of basketball operations in 2017.
The Georgia native will be involved in every aspect of the program at KSU, both on-and-off the court.
As the director of operations at Memphis, Winchell was directly responsible for all team related compliance and administrative tasks and was the coordinator of all team travel and meals. Winchell was also the liaison to the men’s basketball and volleyball teams, the equipment room, as well as marketing and special events.
While acting as the team’s video coordinator, Winchell was responsible for tape exchange and game film as well as preparing video for scouting reports.
Winchell was a four-year letter winner at Memphis from 2008-2011, completing her stellar career with school records for three-point field goals made (214) and attempts (638). She also ranks fifth in the program’s history with 384 assists. A two-year team captain, Winchell played her last three seasons under Melissa McFerrin. She received the team’s 2011 Coaches’ and Les Phillips Memorial awards.
Following graduation, Winchell played a season of professional basketball with Karlovy Vary in the ZBL league before taking a graduate assistant coach position at Christian Brothers University. She coached under current Lady Bucs’ head coach Sarah Condra from 2012-15.
During her time with the Lady Bucs, Winchell coached two All-Gulf South Conference players in Breanna Ridgell (2013-14, 2014-15) and Erica Burgess (2013-14). Ridgell and Burgess also earned Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team distinction.
Winchell graduated with her degree in sport and leisure management from the University of Memphis in May of 2011 and earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in finance from Christian Brothers University in December of 2014.
