OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - Kennesaw State relief pitcher Daniel Powell has been named to the National Pitcher of the Year Award watch list, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday. The prestigious list recognizes 142 of the nation's top hurlers and features pitchers from 20 different conferences, including six from Conference USA.
Powell, who was named to the Stopper of the Year Award preseason watch list by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, has been one of the top pitchers in the country to open the season. The right-hander owns a 3-0 record with two saves and a 0.60 ERA (1 ER/15.0 IP), leading Conference USA in each category.
Powell also ranks among the conference and national leaders in several additional statistics, including WHIP (0.87, leads CUSA relievers), batting average against (.133, leads CUSA relievers) and strikeouts (18, second-most among CUSA relievers).
The Roswell, Ga., native is the first Owl named to the National Pitcher of the Year watch list since Stephen Janas received the honor during the 2013 season.
