COLUMBIA, S.C. – Kennesaw State softball dropped both of its Power Four contests today in the Carolina Classic, falling to Louisville and No. 20/16 South Carolina.
The Black and Gold were supposed to play four times this weekend, but it got reduced to two after inclement weather reports canceled Sunday's games against Louisville and Boston University.
Macie Howes extended her hitting streak to seven to open the season.
Former Owl
Lexie Shaver made an appearance in the second game as a pinch hitter.
Game 1: Louisville 4, KSU 0
Both teams opened the game with multiple runners on.
Ava Guzowski and Howes recorded back-to-back two-out hits but were stranded. The same result occurred for the Cardinals as they had runners in scoring position but flied out to end the inning.
In the second inning, Louisville scored three runs in what ultimately decided the contest. The first run came through on a fielder's choice where
Rylee Limberger made the throw to third. A hit-by-pitch and walk with the bases loaded brought home the other two scores.
Leah Jannakos came out of the bullpen and recorded the final out of the inning.
The Black and Gold kept racking up hits, finishing with a game-high seven, but couldn't get on the scoreboard.
Louisville tacked on an additional run in the fourth courtesy of the long ball.
Game 2: South Carolina 12, KSU 0 (5)
The game looked as though it would go into the second inning scoreless after
Taylor Daniel tagged Karley Shelton out at the plate. The Gamecocks challenged the call and the play was overturned.
A two-out rally in the following frame surged four South Carolina runs. SC repeated its efforts in the third to go up 9-0.
The game ended after five innings due to the run rule.
