ATLANTA —
Dominic Ducariu battled into the main draw with two qualifying-round wins, while two doubles duos notched victories of their own, headlining Kennesaw State men's tennis' success at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships Oct. 14-16 at Byers Tennis Complex.
"Dom had a great weekend getting through two tough qualifying matches and then pushing one of the top players in our region in the main draw," said KSU associate head coach
Simon Pritchard. "Dom's been working hard all summer and fall, so I'm glad to see that pay off with these results."
Ducariu opened the tournament facing Georgia State's Pietro Bonivento in the singles qualifying round of 64. After dispatching his Panther opponent in straight sets (6-0, 6-2), Ducariu surged into the main draw with a round of 32 win over Florida Gulf Coast's Jonathan Baron (6-4, 7-5).
Despite eventually falling to Carlini Gianluca of Georgia Tech, Ducariu gave the Yellow Jacket all he could handle in a 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 4-6 main draw decision.
Ben Hudson's main draw play was also cut short with a 2-6, 2-6 loss to South Florida's James Newton.
Nathan Walters and
Xavi Ferrer joined Ducariu with singles qualifying round of 64 wins.
Walters topped Davis Taylor of Georgia Southern (6-1, 7-5), while Ferrer overcame Georgia Tech's Owen DeMuth 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2.
More success followed for the Owls in the doubles round of 64 with
Konstantinos Megalemos and
Kyvan Rietkerk, as well as Ferrer and Walters recording wins.
Megalemos and Rietkerk posted their fifth win of the season in an 8-5 defeat of UCF's Clement Lemire and Nicolas Oliveira. Ferrer and Walters rolled by North Florida's Youssef Labbene and Noah Sauer in an 8-1 decision.
KSU continues its fall season at the CCB Invitational, Oct. 23-25, in Birmingham, Alabama.
