DALLAS – Kennesaw State's Collins Kipkemboi has been named the Conference USA Men's Athlete of the Week, while Samantha McGarity was selected as the Conference USA Women's Freshman of the Week for their performances at the Louisville Cross Country Classic, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kipkemboi, a junior, finished runner-up in a field of 326 runners with a time of 23:38.1 in the men's 8k. He placed ahead of competitors from Middle Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Arkansas State, ETSU and others, helping lead the Owls to a 12th-place team finish.
This marks the second Conference USA Athlete of the Week honor for Kipkemboi and the first in program history.
McGarity turned in an impressive performance in the women's 6k blue race, clocking a time of 21:42.6 to finish eighth overall. She was the top freshman finisher in the race, placing ahead of runners from San Diego, Stetson, Middle Tennessee, St. Bonaventure and Murray State. Mcgarity helped lead KSU to its first win since 2009.
It is McGarity's first Conference USA Freshman of the Week honor, and also the first in program history.
