MACON, Ga. – Eight members of the Kennesaw State women's tennis team competed at the Mercer Gridiron Classic, held Friday through Sunday.
"We had a good weekend overall," said Director of Tennis
Matt Emery. "It was too bad the final day got rained out, as Ema and Sofia were playing each other in one final, and Maria was up a set and a break in the other final. Going 14-2 in singles on Saturday was a very strong effort across the board. Congrats to Irene and Maria for going 6-1 on the weekend combined and getting their first of many collegiate wins for the Owls."
The Owls went 28-10 overall and 14-2 in singles action on Saturday.
In singles play,
Ema Baraniakova and
Sofia Madrid advanced to the finals of the A1 East draw with 3-0 records before their match was halted due to rain. Baraniakova earned straight-set wins over opponents from South Alabama and Florida Southern, along with a three-set victory against Polina Ramenskaja of Jacksonville State (3-6, 6-3, 6-2). Madrid opened with a straight-set win over North Georgia and followed with three-set wins against Troy and Mercer.
Maria Ivankovic and
Terezia Baraniakova met in the Flight B1 semifinal, with Ivankovic earning a 6-3, 6-3 win. Baraniakova posted victories over Jacksonville State and South Alabama, while Ivankovic defeated players from Alabama State and Florida Southern.
In doubles,
Izabelle Persson and
Laura Nadaska finished third in Flight A after a 7-6 (7-4) win over South Alabama.
