Starting Blocks
The Kennesaw State track and field teams will be well represented by nine athletes competing in nine events at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The University of Kentucky will play host to the NCAA Championships East First Rounds from May 22-25 in Lexington. The men will compete on May 22 and May 24 while the women compete on May 23 and May 25. Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective events earn berths into the NCAA Championships. The best 24 relay times also advanced to NCAA Championships. Athletes with the top-12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West preliminaries will advance for the semifinals/finals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 5-8. There is no decathlon or heptathlon competition at this part of the NCAA Championships. The top-24 decathlon and heptathlon marks in the nation earn an automatic berth to the finals of the NCAA Championships.
NCAA East First Round Event Preview Capsules (By Gender)
Men's Hammer
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 10 a.m.
KSU Competitor: Zachary Peterson
Entry Mark/Seed: 62.84m (206'3")/No. 35
Outlook:
Peterson will open action for the Owls in Lexington on Wednesday morning. Peterson won the hammer throw at the ASUN Outdoor Championships with a mark of 61.44m (201'7"). He also won the hammer throw at the Jim Green Invitational with a career-best toss of 62.84m (206'2"). He will try to become the third Kennesaw State men's hammer thrower to reach the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Isaiah Rogers placed second at East First Rounds and 11
th in the finals last season.
Men's Javelin
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 1 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Ahmed Magour
Entry Mark/Seed: 65.75m (215'18")/No. 33
Outlook:
Magour broke the school record in the javelin three times this season. He won the javelin with a season-best toss of 65.75m (215'8") at the ASUN Championship. That mark established a KSU and ASUN Championship record. Magour reached the NCAA Finals in 2022 when he competed at Georgia. He will be looking for the Owl to advance to finals in the javelin.
Men's Long Jump
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 6 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Kaelen Mitchell
Entry Mark/Seed: 7.57m (24'10")/No. 43
Outlook:
Mitchell will be making his second consecutive appearance at NCAA First Rounds in the long jump. He will need a big mark to become the first Owl to reach the NCAA finals in the long jump since Andre Dorsey in 2016.
Men's Shot Put
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Caleb Hartley
Entry Mark/Seed: 18.14m (59'6.25")/ No. 37
Outlook:
Hartley has not finished worse than eighth in the shot put in the four meets he competed in this season. He won the shot put with a toss of 18.14m (59'6.25") at the ASUN Outdoor Championships. He will look to become the fourth man since 2011 to represent KSU in this event at the NCAA finals.
Men's Pole Vault
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
KSU Competitors: Simon Seid
Entry Mark/Seed: 5.36m (17'7")/ No. 15
Outlook:
Seid has quickly emerged as one of the top pole vaulters in program history. Seid won the gold medal at both ASUN championships in 2023. His mark of 5.36m (17'7) set a new program and ASUN Championship record. He owns two of top four pole vault clearances in program history. Kennesaw State's Jack Rhea is the only athlete in ASUN history to reach the NCAA finals in the pole vault.
Men's 400m
Event Schedule: First Round – Wednesday at 7:25 p.m. | Quarterfinals – Friday at 6:50 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Malik Hussie
Entry Mark/Seed: 46.38 seconds/No. 35
Outlook:
Hussie will be the only athlete to represent KSU on the track at East First Rounds. He secured the silver medal in the 400m in a personal-best time of 46.38 seconds at the ASUN Championships. That time established a new program record in the event. Hussie will look to become the first Owl and third member of the ASUN Conference to reach the NCAA finals.
Men's Discus Throw
Event Schedule: First Round – Friday at 1 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Anthony Harrison
Entry Mark/Seed: 56.18m (184'4")/No.30
Outlook:
Harrison won the gold medal in the discus throw at the ASUN Championships. The senior has two wins, one runner-up and one third-place finish in the discus this season. He will be looking to reach the finals for the second consecutive year.
Men's Triple Jump
Event Schedule: First Round – Friday at 6 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Justin Campbell
Entry Mark/Seed: 15.35m (50'4.5")/No. 43
Outlook:
Campbell landed a personal-best mark of 15.35m (50'4.5") at the Jim, Green Invitational. The field for this event features three of the top five ranked triple jumpers in the NCAA this season. Should Campbell advance he would be the third Owl and fifth different person from an ASUN program to reach the finals. His brother, Kelvin advanced to the finals in 2023 on his final jump at First Rounds in Jacksonville.
Women
Women's Javelin
Event Schedule: First Round – Thursday at 1 p.m.
KSU Competitor: Kaylee Clark
Entry Mark/Seed: 48.62m (159'6")/No. 23
Outlook:
Clark has not finished outside the top seven in a meet this season. The freshman won the javelin at two meets this season. She won the gold medal at the ASUN Championship with a mark of 48.62m (159'6"). Clark will aim to become the first women's javelin thrower in school history to reach the finals.
