HUMACAO, PUERTO RICO. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team leads the Palmas del Mar Collegiate after the opening round of play at Palmas del Mar Golf Club on Sunday.
KSU carded a round of 8-under par to hold a one-shot lead over Arkansas.
"Really solid start for us here in Puerto Rico," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "We took advantage of the scoring opportunities today and had all five players contributing and fighting for a counting score. The guys really enjoy the course and are having a blast on the trip. We look to keep the throttle down the next two days."
Shaun Cook led the Owls on Sunday with a 5-under par round of 67. The sophomore rolled in seven birdies and nine pars during his opening round. He is tied for the lead with Elon's Matt Doyle.
"Shaun is back in a familiar position tied for the lead and he is hungry to set the pace once again" Odom added.
Claes Borregaard is tied for ninth after a 2-under par 70. The junior made a bogey on No. 4 but played his final 14 holes at 2-under par.
Joshua Todd played his last six holes at even par to card a 1-under 71. The freshman is tied for 14
th.
Hugo Lari made an eagle, three birdies and nine pars to record an even-par round of 72. The senior is tied for 26
th.
Kyle Bachkosky shot a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 51
st.
Playing as an individual,
Reed Sweigart is tied for 61
st after a 3-over par round of 75 on Sunday.
Round two of the Palmas del Mar Collegiate is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12. Kennesaw State will be paired with Arkansas, UNCG and Michigan on Monday with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET.
