KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State men's golf is in first place after the first two rounds of the Pinetree Intercollegiate, which was played at Pinetree Country Club on Monday.
The Owls carded rounds of 20-over par 304 and 1-under par 287 for a 15-over par total of 591. KSU leads the 10-team field by seven shots over second-place Georgia State.
"Pinetree showed its teeth today and unfortunately we were caught off guard on the back nine of the first round," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "But this team is very resilient, and they fought back in very challenging conditions to take the lead into the final round. Tomorrow we will start with a different mindset and do our best to protect the Nest and keep momentum heading into the fall finale. Today's game ball goes to
Hunter Gillard who struggled in his morning back nine and finished with an extremely important 74 in the afternoon that included a hole out for eagle on 16. Claes set the pace once again and looks to be the second consecutive Owl to win individual honors at the Pinetree Intercollegiate."
Claes Borregaard guided KSU through 36 holes. The senior birdied his final two holes of the opening round to card a 2-over 74. He would rebound in round two with a 3-under par 69 to earn an overnight share of the 36-hole lead at 1-under par 143. He is one of just two players under par in the 60-player event. He leads the field in birdies with 11 through 36 holes.
"Today was a stressful day," Borregaard said. "I was struggling out there in the morning but kept my head down and fought. Obviously, the team all battled a little this morning as well but I'm really proud of how we turned it around in the afternoon. Tomorrow won't be easy so we just have to keep the pedal down through all 18 tomorrow."
Kyle Bachkosky carded rounds of 73-72 and tied for fourth at 1-over par 145. Bachkosky rolled in 24 pars and six birdies during his opening 36 holes. His 24 pars are tied for third-most in the field through 36 holes.
Shaun Cook bounced back from an opening round of 77 with an even-par 72 on Monday afternoon. He is tied for tenth at 5-over par 149. Cook made 11 pars during round two.
Luca Gallingani recorded rounds of 80-78 and is tied for 38
th at 14-over par 158.
Hunter Gillard (86-74) is tied for 45
th at 16-over par 160.
