KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State baseball split its doubleheader with FGCU on Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium. The Owls (27-20, 15-8) defeated the Eagles (28-19, 13-11) by a score of 8-4 in game one but dropped the second, 14-3. The rubber match is set for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Â
Game One: Kennesaw State 8 | Florida Gulf Coast 4
Jack Myers made his 12th start and tossed four innings. The right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
The KSU bullpen took over in the fifth and allowed only two hits in the final five frames. Nathan Holler (5-4) tossed a scoreless inning to earn the win in the contest.
Luke Torbert entered in the sixth and worked himself out of a jam. With runners in scoring position and no outs, the right-hander punched out two and induced a ground out to escape with a scoreless inning.
Smith Pinson tossed the final three frames en route to his third career save. The freshman allowed zero runs on two hits and struck out one. Pinson lowered his ERA to a team-leading 3.40 in the contest.
The Kennesaw State offense registered 14 hits in the game. Four Owls added multi-hit performances while all nine starters recorded at least one hit.
Nick Hassan led the way with a 3-for-4 afternoon. The sophomore contributed a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Simon and Donovan Cash each added two hits in the contest. Simon finished 2-for-5 while Cash was 2-for-4 with a walk at the plate.
Spencer Hanson and Brayden Eidson each left the yard in the win. Hanson's long ball was his second of the year while Eidson's was his first. Hanson recorded a team-high three RBI in the contest and finished 1-for-4. Eidson produced two hits in the nine-hole and scored one run.
FGCU scored in its first at-bat to take an early 1-0 lead. KSU responded in the second with four runs on six hits. Hanson blasted a three-run homer to jumpstart the offense. KSU plated one more on a single through the right-side from Hatcher.
The Eagles tied the game with a three-run blast in the fourth. Left fielder Ian Farrow belted his 12th of the season to notch the score at 4-4.
Zac Corbin ripped a single to left to start the KSU fifth. A walk from Cash and fielder's choice from Cash Young put runners on the corners. Hudson Mimbs and Hassan each added RBI singles that gave KSU a 6-4 advantage.
The Owls added two insurance runs in the seventh with two-out hits from Hassan and Eidson. Hassan laced a double to left and scored when Eidson smashed his first home run of the year. This pushed the score to 8-4 which held as the final.
Game Two: Kennesaw State 3 | Florida Gulf Coast 14
John Bezdicek made his 12th start and earned a no-decision in the contest. The southpaw allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five. After today's game, Bezdicek sits at 289 career strikeouts and is 11 away from the 300-mark.
The KSU offense contributed six hits in game two. Donovan Cash led the way with a 2-for-4 performance. He was the only Owl with multiple hits.
Josh Hatcher, Spencer Hanson, Mason Jones and Nick Colina all added a base hit in the contest. Jones scored a run while Hanson and Colina registered one RBI a piece.
FGCU scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Eagles drew a bases loaded walk in the third and then hit solo home runs in the next two innings.
Down 3-0, KSU struck back with one run in the fifth. Jones tripled down the left field line and scored on a single from Colina. The RBI was Colina's 15th on the year.
In the sixth, Corbin led off with a walk and advanced to third when Cash slashed an opposite field double just inside the foul line. With two outs in the frame, Hanson was called upon to pinch hit. On the first pitch of his at-bat, the junior ripped a double off the left field wall to tie the game 3-3.
FGCU added five runs in the top of the seventh to pull away. The Eagles scored two in the eighth and four in the ninth to move their advantage to 14-3, which held as the final.
