FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a game that featured six lead changes, Kennesaw State baseball pulled out a dramatic 7-6 victory over No. 4 FGCU on Thursday afternoon inside Swanson Stadium. With the win, the Owls (33-26, 19-11 ASUN) advance to the semifinal round while the Eagles (35-23, 17-13 ASUN) have been eliminated.
With one out in the eighth inning, Spencer Hanson doubled and was joined on base when Brayden Eidson worked a four-pitch walk. Nick Hassan stepped up to the plate and ripped a two-RBI single to left field that allowed Eidson to slide in just ahead of the throw. This moved Kennesaw State ahead, 7-6, and marked the final lead change in the contest.
John Bezdicek made his 15th start of the season and worked 4.2 innings. The southpaw allowed two runs (one earned), on three hits with four strikeouts. With his first punch-out in the game, Bezdicek registered career strikeout number 300. He was credited with a no-decision in the contest.
Luke Torbert was the first arm out of the bullpen and tossed 1.2 innings. The senior surrendered one run on two hits in his 21st appearance.
Jack Myers (5-3) threw the final 2.1 innings and earned the win. The right-hander entered in the seventh and sealed the game for KSU on the mound.
Josh Hatcher continued to flex his power and blasted a home run for the fourth-consecutive game. The center fielder finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a walk.
Zac Corbin blasted a go-ahead home run in the seventh for his sixth on the year. The second baseman was one-of-three Owls to register multiple hits in today's game.
This afternoon, Tyler Simon made his 230th appearance in the Black & Gold. This ties Chris McGowan for the Kennesaw State program record. The shortstop finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Spencer Hanson added his second-straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance. The KSU designated hitter recorded his ninth double of the season and has posted hits in all three of the Owls' ASUN tournament games.
FGCU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage that held into the fifth frame. Back-to-back walks from Hassan and Nick Colina put runners on base for Hatcher. With a full count, the first-team All-ASUN selection launched his fourth home run of the tournament to give the Owls their first lead of the afternoon.
The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the seventh with two, two-out hits but KSU answered quickly. With one out left in the frame, Corbin belted a two-run shot that gave the Owls a 5-4 lead. This marked the fourth lead change of the afternoon.
FGCU once again pulled ahead in the eighth with two runs, but the Owls did not back down. With runners on second and third, Hassan laced a full-count single through the left side that allowed the go-ahead run to score just ahead of the throw. This put Kennesaw State ahead 7-6 and was the sixth lead change in the game.
In the ninth, Myers collected two quick outs before allowing two singles. The right-hander battled and induced a ground out to end the game and advance Kennesaw State onto bracket play.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow and will face No. 2 Lipscomb in the semifinals of the ASUN Championship. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. inside Swanson Stadium.
