Cash Homers Twice, Owls Secure Series Over Stetson

Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. – In the final home game of the season, the bats were on fire as Kennesaw State baseball secured the series over Stetson with a 14-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Owls (30-22, 17-10 ASUN Conference) defeated the Hatters (23-28, 8-19 ASUN) in five-of-six attempts this season and remain in second place in the ASUN Eastern Division.

On the weekend, KSU scored 46 runs and produced 51 hits. This sets a new season-high in both categories which was previously the 41 runs and 49 hits the Owls scored on Mar. 25-27 versus North Florida.

The offense combined for 11 home runs with four coming in today's game. The team also finished the weekend with 18 extra-base hits.

Jared Rine (4-0) made his second start on the mound and worked a season-high five innings. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits and struck out five.

Brayden Eidson earned his first save on the year as he worked the final four innings. The southpaw allowed zero earned runs on four hits.

Offensively, Kennesaw State collected 17 hits while eight-of-nine starters recorded a knock. Six starters recorded two-or-more while Spencer Hanson and Nick Colina led the way with three.

Hanson extended his hit streak to eight after producing a 3-for-5 afternoon with three runs scored. The KSU designated hitter hit his second home run of the series in the sixth inning and finished the weekend with eight hits.

Colina posted his seventh game on the year with multiple hits and went 3-for-4 at the plate. The outfielder scored twice and drew one walk in the win.

Donovan Cash continued his power surge with two home runs in the ballgame. The first baseman was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. On the weekend, Cash blasted four home runs and drove in nine runs. He has posted eight consecutive games with two-or-more hits.

Tyler Simon added a three RBI performance with a bases-clearing double off the centerfield wall. The shortstop ended the afternoon 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Simon has played in 223 career games and is eight away from breaking the KSU record.

Josh Hatcher scored twice and drove in one while contributing a 1-for-2 afternoon at the plate. The center fielder walked twice and extended his hit streak to eight in the game.

Joseph Gossett contributed out of the nine-hole with a 2-for-5 performance. The left fielder drove in one run and scored once in the win.

Zac Corbin left the yard for his fourth long ball of the year. The second baseman ended the game 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Corbin drove in five runs on the weekend.

The Owls struck in the first with a two-run homer from Cash. Hatcher led off the frame with a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two-outs, Cash smashed his seventh bomb of the year to put KSU up, 2-0.

In the second, Hanson and Colina ripped back-to-back singles to start a rally. A Hanson stolen base put runners on the corners for Hassan, who grounded the ball up the middle to score the third Owl run. Gossett legged out an infield single on a perfectly executed bunt before Hatcher hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to record his 39th RBI.

With two outs in the inning, Corbin slashed a ground ball through the infield to score Hassan from second base. This extended the Owls' advantage to 5-0 after the first two frames.

Kennesaw State blew the game open with a seven-run fifth inning. The Owls compiled five hits, two walks and blasted one home run. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Simon doubled off the centerfield wall to drive in three. On the next pitch, Corbin left the yard to move the score to 12-1.

Hanson and Cash both hit solo shots in the sixth and seventh respectively to add onto the lead. Stetson scored two unearned runs late which moved the score to 14-3 which held as the final.

KSU is back in action Tuesday, May 17 for its final midweek game of the season. The team travels to USC Upstate to square off with the Spartans in Spartanburg, S.C. Earlier in the year, KSU defeated Upstate in extra-innings on a Tyler Simon walk-off single. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside Cleveland S. Harley Stadium.
