STATESBORO, Ga. – Kennesaw State baseball's early lead was not enough as No. 24 Georgia Southern scored three runs in the final three innings to secure a 9-6 win on Wednesday night inside J.I. Clements Stadium. The Owls (25-16, 13-5 ASUN Conference) split the two-game midweek series with the Eagles (28-13, 14-4 Sun Belt Conference) with each team earning one win apiece.
Makenzie Stills made his fifth start on the mound and tossed three innings of one-hit baseball. The sophomore surrendered two runs and struck out one.
Kennesaw State outhit Georgia Southern, 11-8, to mark the 23rd time the team has posted 10-or-more base hits in its 41 games. The loss is only the third time this season that KSU has fallen when it registered more hits than its opponent.
After going hitless in the series opener, Josh Hatcher bounced back with a 4-for-4 night. The outfielder scored three runs, registered one RBI, and was a triple shy of his third cycle on the season. Hatcher has now recorded six games with four hits or more and is only two shy of reaching 200 for his career.
Spencer Hanson extended his hit streak to five and recorded the first home run of his Kennesaw State career. The designated hitter contributed a 2-for-4 performance with one run scored and two RBI. Hanson has now driven in eight runs in his last five starts.
Hudson Mimbs and Donovan Cash each added two hits on the evening. Mimbs scored one run while Cash posted an RBI.
Tyler Simon's triple in the third inning was his fourth on the season and moved him into first place on the team. The KSU shortstop ended the game 1-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
KSU is back in action this Friday, April 29 for game one of its ASUN Conference series with the University of North Florida. Earlier in the season, the Owls swept the Ospreys for their first 6-0 conference start in program history. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. inside Harmon Stadium.
