FGCU Takes Series Finale Against Owls

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team (14-26, 6-12 ASUN Conference) ended a three-game series against the FGCU Eagles (14-30,  7-14 ASUN) on the wrong side of a 10-3 final Sunday afternoon.
 
For the second-straight game in the series, the Eagles tallied two runs in the top half of the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead.

The deficit increased to 3-0 after another Eagle run in the second.

Kiera Cooper doubled in the bottom of the second to score Caroline Shumeyko from first and cut the Eagle lead to 3-1.

FGCU tacked on another two runs in the top of the fourth to go up by four, 5-1.

Taylor Cates led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to right center. Two batters later, Cooper sent one over the left field wall and the Eagle lead decreased to 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, FGCU added four more runs to take a 9-3 lead. The deficit pushed out to 10-3 after a one-run seventh for the Eagles. The KSU rally came up short in the bottom of the seventh.

Melanie Bennett (10-14) pitched 4.0 innings and was credited with the loss.
 
GAME NOTES
>> Brinaya Bailey's second inning walk increased her reached-base streak to 15 games.
>> Pacy Villa (8), Ty Hardeman (7), Faith Alexander (6) and Cates (6) all continued their reached-base streaks.
>> Cates hit her team and conference-leading 14th homer in the series finale. Her hitting streak now stands at three games.
 
ON DECK
Kennesaw State heads south for the final midweek game of the schedule against the Georgia State Panthers on Wednesday, Apr. 27. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. The Black and Gold defeated the Panthers in an 8-6 final on Friday, Feb. 25 off a Cates walk-off homer.
The Owls conclude the 2022 regular season on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 against the Jacksonville Dolphins. Greep will be honored for 'Senior Day' before Saturday's game.
