KSU Falls to Liberty in ASUN Semifinals

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kennesaw State men's tennis team fell to Liberty 4-0 in the semifinal round of the ASUN Championship at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday.

The loss ended a historic season for KSU which saw the Owls set the school record for most wins in a season (15), road wins (8) and conference wins (7). The Owls collected a share of the ASUN regular season title for the first time in program history.

"Credit to Liberty … they played this match exactly the way they should have… loose, fearless and with nothing to lose," Director of Tennis Matt Emery said. "We were a just a little bit nervous and hesitant at some spots today and that was really the difference."

Liberty won the doubles point and three singles matches to secure the victory.

The Flames won the doubles point with victories on courts one and three.

Liberty would seal the match by winning the first three singles matches to finish. KSU did receive strong efforts in singles from Matthew Terry, Hugo Salmeron and Kevin Patel. Terry won his opening set 6-3 and was tied 5-5 when the match called. Salmeron was leading 6-1, 4-6, 3-2 and Patel led 7-6 (7-4), 2-1 when the match concluded.

"Thanks again to our seniors, Sergio, Matt, and Kevin," Emery said. "They have absolutely raised the bar and standard of Kennesaw State men's tennis and I will always be grateful for their impact on our program."

The Owls will return to action in the fall of 2022.
