The Kennesaw State women's basketball team begins its quest toward an ASUN Championship on Wednesday night, as the Owls visit the Colonels in Richmond, Ky. in a battle between the sixth seed in the east and the third seed in the west.
The visitors enter EKU's McBrayer Arena after an amazing effort against the second-best team in the conference, Liberty; the matchup came down to the final minutes and narrowly missed out on a statement win against the Flames.
PRENCIS PERFECTION
Freshman forward Prencis Harden is coming off of the best performance of her young career, putting up a personal best of 13 points in just 18 minutes of play.Â
No moment symbolized the native Georgian's tenaciousness than the one she manifested in the third quarter on Saturday, stripping Liberty star Bridgette Rettstatt of the ball and taking it all the way to the hoop for the fast-break layup.
The five-foot-11 rookie has progressed well in her first season, making veteran plays on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
AGENT ZERO
Kennesaw State no. 0 Amani Johnson's contributions in her four years have been no secret, but she has gotten even better in the last month or so.Â
In her previous 10 games heading into postseason play, the point guard has averaged 15.5 points per game and has assisted 38 baskets in that time.Â
She is two weeks removed from her ASUN Player of the Week victory and the SGA President also earned a place in the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in February.Â
Known as a playmaker, Johnson notched her season high of nine assists in the team's previous fixture against Eastern Kentucky and also netted 11 points.
SCOUTING EKU
The Colonels rank toward the top of the ASUN in both blocked shots and total rebounds and much of this can be attributed to the team's size. Eight out of 15 players on the EKU roster are six-foot or taller. Leading the pack in scoring is six-foot-two forward Jayla Johnson, who nets 12.9 points per game.
On the relatively shorter side of players for EKU, five-foot-nine Italian Alice Recanati is still a lethal guard. She ranks second in team scoring with 10.1 points per game, and ranks in the top five of the ASUN in both assists and steals.Â
Eastern Kentucky will be hungry to show up in its first ASUN playoff game in style. The Richmond, Ky. outfit has not appeared in a conference playoff game since the 2016-17 season, where the Colonels fell to Belmont in the OVC Championship game.Â
