KENNESAW, Ga. – The Ryan Coe era of Kennesaw State baseball got off to a winning start Friday night in Stillwell Stadium.
The Owls open their season with a 9-5 victory against Morehead State, thanks to a stellar relief outing from Nathan Holler and a hot seventh inning from the KSU offense.
Making his first start in black and gold, Jack Myers began his evening with two strikeouts in the first inning; the Butler transfer struck out seven Eagles in his KSU debut.
After Gavin Patel scored the game's first run with an RBI single, Cash Young marked his first Owl appearance with a three-run bomb to right-center field to take a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Morehead State would pull back a run from a wild pitch in the fourth inning, before taking a 5-4 lead in the fifth.
Deployed in the designated hitter role, Spencer Hanson tied the game at five with a line drive over the head of the Eagle shortstop in the bottom of the sixth.
The hosts made sure there was no coming back for Morehead State in the seventh inning, with Nick Hassan doubling in a run to left and Tyler Simon with an RBI base hit to right.
Coming in when the Owls were down, Holler ensured victory for his squad by allowing no runs and a solitary hit in the final two innings.
Opening its account with a 9-5 win, Kennesaw State baseball continues the series against the Eagles on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader; the first game will kick off at 12 p.m. before the second game's start at 3 p.m.
