BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team won its third consecutive match following a 6-1 win at Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon. The win gives KSU (3-0) its first three-match win streak since the 2017 season when it defeated Alabama A&M, Western Carolina and USC Upstate.
"It was great to compete again after a few weeks off", said Director of Tennis
Matt Emery. "I thought we competed well today and did a good job of not giving them any momentum once we had it. Shout out to
Sophia Unger for getting her first dual match win and getting the clinch."
For the third consecutive match, the Owls picked up the doubles point.
Taylor Dean/
Kat Muzik earned a 6-3 win on court one, while
Ji Youn Lee/
Valentina Taddia secured the doubles point with a close 7-6 (5) victory from court two.
KSU earned five of the six singles points to capture its third straight win. The Owls got on the board early with wins from Dean (6-2, 6-2), Pinedo (6-4, 6-2) and freshman
Sophia Unger (6-3, 6-2). Unger made her collegiate debut in the match and secured the first victory of her KSU career.
Muzik lost set one but came back to claim a point for the Owls in a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 match. Lee collected the final point for Kennesaw State in a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (7) victory.
With the win, KSU evens the all-time series with Gardner-Webb at one win apiece. The Owls are back in action next Monday, Feb. 14 as they face off with in-state foe Mercer. Start time will be 3:00 p.m. at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.
