Game Notes
The Kennesaw State women's basketball team's ASUN campaign begins Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. against the Liberty Flames.
Â
This is the Owls' first game in nearly three weeks, with the finale to the team's non-conference slate canceled and the ASUN opener against Jacksonville postponed.
AMAZING AMANI
Team co-captain
Amani Johnson is firing on all cylinders heading into conference play, as the Pennsylvanian is coming off of her first double-double of the season.
Johnson tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds in the team's loss to Auburn, only the third time the point guard has registered 10-plus boards in a game.
The senior has shown head coach
Octavia Blue that she has the safest hands in the squad, sporting the 37th-best assist turnover ratio in the country with a 2.42.
Johnson's most impressive quality continues to be her stamina, as only nine players in Division I have more playing time per game than Kennesaw State's SGA President.
THE DEEP END
Forward
Alexis Poole is coming off her highest-scoring performance of the year, scoring 20 against the Tigers; this marks the first time Poole has scored 20-plus points since March 2, 2020.
The senior from Ellenwood, Ga. will hope she can recreate her last home performance against the Dolphins, as Poole tallied 25 points and eight boards on Jan. 25, 2020.
In Poole's last ASUN season, she led the team with 18.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in conference play to capture a place in the ASUN All-Conference First Team.
SCOUTING LIBERTY
The Liberty Flames possess the best record in the ASUN conference, and it's easy to see why when you take a look at their stats. The Lynchburg, Va. team is no slouch on the offensive side of the ball, but the Flames boast elite numbers on the defensive side.
Liberty holds its opponents to a measly 48.4 points per game, the fourth-best scoring defense in the nation. This can be attributed to head coach Carey Green's team allowing only a 31.8 shooting percentage from the field. The Flames also control the glass in their games, placing fifth in the NCAA Division I rankings for rebounding margin.
There's no doubt that Mya Berkman is the focal point of Liberty's system, with the center leading the team in scoring and rebounding. The Owls will hope that they can keep the ball out of the redshirt junior's hands, as Berkman's 68.1 field-goal percentage is the third-best rate in the nation.
NEXT GAME
The Owls return to the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 12 for Student Appreciation Night against FGCU. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
