SPARTANBURG, SC. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team clinched a season-opening win 5-2 over Wofford at the Reeves Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. With the win, KSU (1-0) secured its first season-opener since the 2011 season when it defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-2 on Jan. 27.
"I loved how we came out in the doubles today," Director of Tennis
Matt Emery said. "Ji and Sofia getting off the court quick in singles and putting us up 3-0 was huge and set up Taylor for the clinch. We are ready to compete hard again tomorrow against a good Presbyterian team."
The Owls picked up the doubles point with wins from
Ji Youn Lee and
Valentina Taddia and
Sofia Pinedo and
Soomin Kim. Lee and Taddia dominated with a 6-0 performance, while Pinedo and Kim cruised to a 6-1 set victory.
Taylor Dean and
Kat Muzik were tied 3-3 on court one but did not finish the match due to KSU clinching the doubles point.
KSU quickly claimed three singles matches in two sets to secure the win. The Owls jumped out to a quick two-point lead with wins from Lee and Pinedo. Lee overpowered Wilbur 6-3, 6-0, while Pinedo held down court six and defeated Kahrs 6-2, 6-2. Dean clinched the match for the Owls and took down Massie 7-5, 6-4. Kim would add the final point for KSU after she beat Brennan in three sets: 3-6, 7-6, 1-0.
With the win, KSU evened the all-time series with Wofford at 1-1. The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they face off with Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. Start time will be at 11 a.m. on the Templeton Tennis Courts.
