Game Notes
The Kennesaw State women's basketball team begins a three-game road trip with a matchup against the Stetson Hatters.
The Owls are looking for their first victory in conference play after starting their league slate against the two teams with the best records in the ASUN.
PERFECT PICCOLINO
With a depleted squad of seven players against FGCU on Wednesday,
Gillian Piccolino stepped up in a big way.
Deployed more in a forward role, the Pennsylvanian set a new personal best for rebounds with 13.
The junior also logged three blocks, tying
Jah'Che Whitfield's three as a season best for Kennesaw State.
Piccolino was on the court for 38 minutes, something she hasn't been able to do since she was a freshman; this is a positive sign, as it seems she has reached her full pace after sustaining a leg injury last season.
DIVERSITY IN SCORING
Four different players scored 10-plus points in the Owls' FGCU faceoff, the first time KSU has done so since the first game of the season against Thomas University.
Among those was freshman
Amaris Baker, who shot 11 points for a career high and more than her last four games combined.
Center
Gabi Legister also tied her season high of 10 points and was perfect from the free-throw line, shooting four-for-four.
SCOUTING STETSON
The Hatters possess the second-strongest defense in the ASUN, allowing only 55.3 points per game. Stetson is adept at forcing turnovers, but the program also turns the ball over quite a bit.
Another duality of the Hatters' play is that they're sent to the line often, but also rank 271st in the nation for fewest fouls.
The one-two punch of Tatiana Streun and Yazz Wazeerud-Din contribute to much of Stetson's success on both sides of the ball. Graduating from Portland State, Streun leads the Hatters in both scoring and rebounding since her transfer. The six-foot forward has racked up the third-most boards in the conference this season.
Marietta, Ga. native Wazeerud-Din marked her first year in the ASUN by being named in the all-conference second team. The senior currently ranks third in the league with 2.13 steals per game.
NEXT GAME
The Owls continue their trek of Florida with a trip to UNF, taking on the Ospreys on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
