KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State baseball team faced off against Wofford in the final game of its regular season, falling to the Terriers in a close 5-4 game Tuesday afternoon in the Stillwell Stadium.
The Owls (27-20, 13-8) started off incredibly strong against Wofford (33-18), holding the visitors hitless for the first three innings.
Brayden Eidson got Kennesaw State going in the second inning, hitting a two-out double to left-field. Jake Coro followed suit with a two-bagger down the left-field line to bring the first baseman around for the opening run.
Already up 1-0, Alex Carballo extended the Owls' advantage to two runs by keeping a blast just fair and over the right-field wall; the solo shot was the center fielder's sixth home run of the year.
The Terriers scored four unanswered runs between the fourth and eighth innings, with the Spartanburg, S.C. team plating runs with three base knocks and a sacrifice fly.
The Owls began to rally in the bottom frame of the eighth inning and it all started with an Eidson walk and a Coro hit-by-pitch. Pinch hitter Tyler Tolve came up to plate, coming through with a single to bring home Eidson. In the biggest play of the game, Tyler Simon hit a double to left field. Coro scored easily from third and Tolve rounded third hard, but a pinpoint throw from the Wofford left fielder caught the catcher at the plate to end the inning
A couple more baserunners would get on in the bottom of the ninth inning, but nothing came of the opportunity.
The Owls move on to the first round of the ASUN Championship, facing off against Lipscomb in a best-of-three series starting on Friday, May 21 at 5 p.m. in the Stillwell Stadium.
