Owls Secure Runner-up Finish at ASUN Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Kennesaw State women's track and field team completed action at the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday, May 15 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.KSU finished runner-up scoring 182.50 points. The Owls collected 151 points on Saturday.

Watkins Named ASUN Most Valuable Performer
Jessica Watkins was named Most Valuable Performer of the meet after scoring 26 points for the Owls in the two-day meet. Watkins shared the award with Liberty's Chelsea Igberaese. Watkins won the heptathlon, took second in the 100m hurdles and scored in the long jump and javelin.
 
Heptathlon (Through seven events)
  • Jessica Watkins won the heptathlon scoring a personal-best 5048 points. That point total ranks fifth in ASUN Championship history.
  • Watkins is the fourth different Owl to win this event.
  • Watkins won the long jump with a leap of 5.84m (19'2"), was fourth in the javelin and second in the 800m on Saturday.
  • Kyarra Newton (4557 points), Kywana Donahoo (4224 points) and Ansley Floyd-Jackson (3891 points) finished in sixth, seventh and ninth place.
 
Medal Winners
  • Jasmine Akins tied her personal-best mark with a leap of 12.48m (40.11.5") in the triple jump to finish third.
  • Mollie Speights cleared 1.67m (5'5.75") and Aweng Mawien got over 1.62m (5'3.75") to finish in second and tie for third in the high jump.
  • Kaitlyn Corral finished runner-up in the javelin throw after landing a toss of 39.93m (131'0).
  •  The 4x100 relay team of Olivia Brown, Louise Tocays, Corbin McLean and Jayla Mobley ran a time of 46.09 seconds to secure the bronze medal.
  • Sarah Hendrick ran 2:06.69 (800m) and 4:18.36 (1500m) to win a pair of gold medals. Both those times rank second in ASUN Championship history.
  • Olivia Brown (13.66 seconds) and Jessica Watkins (14.30 seconds) took the gold and silver medals in the 100m hurdles.
  • Jayla Mobley ran a time of 55.75 seconds to finish third in the 400m.
  • Mobley would return to the track later and win the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:01.98.
  • Louise Tocays finished second in the 100m (11.66 seconds) and the 200m (23.86 seconds) in career-best times.
  • Lindsay Billings took second in the 5k in a time of 17.07.81.

"The women battled all weekend and really finished the meet strong. It was great to see a senior like Jessica Watkins go out the way she did with an MVP plaque and some personal-best performances. I am excited for the future and what this program will become. Hopefully we will have a big group headed to NCAA Championships East Preliminaries in two weeks.
 
Next Up
The NCAA Championships East Preliminaries will take place Wednesday, May 26 through Saturday, May 29 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. For each individual event contested at each of the Preliminary Round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes based on TFRRS rankings will be accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition.
