FLORENCE, Ala. - The Kennesaw State baseball team (17-8, 5-2) extended its winning streak to six games in an 8-2 win against North Alabama (4-23, 3-7), hitting a season-high four home runs Friday afternoon in Florence, Ala.
After hitting his first home run of the year in the Georgia State series, Nick Colina got his team going early with a solo shot to the deepest part of Mike D. Lane Field.
Giving his team the early 1-0 lead in the first, Colina tied the game up at 2-2 with another solo long ball in the top of the fourth. The opposite-field home run is the first time this season an Owl went deep twice in a game; Alex Carballo's two-homer performance against Jacksonville State last March was the last time it happened.
Luke Torbert (4-1) engaged in a pitching battle with North Alabama's Hunter Davidson, with the six-foot-two hurler pitching seven innings of two-run ball.
Davidson was able to keep the game deadlocked, until Jake Coro spanked a ball over the right-field fence for his first home run since coming to Kennesaw State. The Owls then led 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, with all three runs coming from solo homers.
While the Owls came back from a pause in a big way, Tyler Simon also returned from a short injury stint with a two-run triple in the eighth inning.
The KSU bats weren't done yet, as Tyler Tolve blasted the game open with a towering three-run bomb to right field. Extending the Owls' lead to 8-2, the KSU backstop took the team lead for home runs with his fifth of the season. Tolve's moonshot was the fourth and final home run of the game, a season best for Kennesaw State and only the fifth time the Owls have hit four home runs in 15 years.
While not finding himself in a save scenario, Jared Rine came in to secure the win for Torbert and did an impeccable job. In two innings of work, Rine struck out two and held the Lions to only one hit. Torbert moves to 4-1 on the season, but it's the fifth start in a row for the junior that the Owls have won.
Kennesaw State will keep the series rolling with a game Saturday at 3 p.m., as the Owls look to build on their six-game winning streak and tremendous Friday showing.
