JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Kennesaw State baseball team (19-9, 7-2) lost a rematch against Jacksonville State (16-15) 8-4 in Jacksonville, Ala. on Tuesday night.
Second baseman Jesse Sherrill got the Owls going by slinging an outside pitch down the right-field line for a leadoff double. Left fielder Tyler Tolve would send the speedy Sherrill home with a knock up the middle to take the early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Joseph Gossett earned his first RBI of the season in the fifth inning, laying down a bunt down the line; the JSU first baseman hurled a wild throw past second base so Jake Coro could easily score from third base. Nick Colina would bat in his ninth run in fourth games with a sacrifice fly to bring McPhee home and cut the Gamecocks' lead to 4-3.
Kennesaw State struggled to keep Jacksonville State off the base paths, walking six batters on the night. The Gamecocks would score three runs in the fifth inning and would cross the plate again in the eighth, putting the finishing touches on the midweek matchup.
Tonight's loss puts an end to KSU's eight-game winning streak and is the first time the offense hasn't put up at least five runs since the March 23 loss against Georgia.
The Owls return to ASUN play this weekend against the Bellarmine Knights, whom Kennesaw State swept in over three games in mid-March. The series begins Friday, April 16 at 2 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.
