LAST TIME OUT
The Owls finished up their second series sweep in a row on Sunday with a 14-4 win against North Alabama. Over the three wins, KSU outscored UNA 33-9. It was the first time Kennesaw State swept an ASUN team on a road trip since April 2016. Kennesaw State has at least 10 hits in four of their last five games and has outscored their opponents 78-19 in the team's unbeaten run.Â
COLINA CAN'T BE STOPPED
Kennesaw State outfielder Nick Colina had a weekend he'll never forget, which was capped by his naming as the ASUN's Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The graduate of North Paulding High School stepped up in a huge way with Kennesaw State missing several key players, batting in eight of the team's 33 runs over the weekend series.
KSU's no. 34 sported a .692 average and a .765 on-base percentage over the three victories, hitting 9-for-13 and reaching base in 13 of his 17 at-bats. With his season statline showing 10 hits and seven RBIs collected before the North Alabama series, Colina nearly doubled both of his season tallies in both categories. Hitting two career home runs going into the weekend, Colina doubled his career tally in his first two at-bats against the Lions on Friday. He continued his display of power on Saturday, pulling a three-run shot over the right-field wall of Mike D. Lane Field in Florence, Ala.Â
A WEEKEND OF FIRSTS
Colina won't be the only person who will always remember the North Alabama series; three different Owls hit their first KSU home runs against the Lions.
After Colina hit his second in the Friday game, third baseman Jake Coro hit a solo shot for his first Kennesaw State home run since transferring from Southern New Hampshire University. The 8-2 win was only the fifth time in 15 years that the Owls hit four home runs in a game.Â
In the second game, designated hitter Nick Hassan grabbed the first RBI hit of the game with a one-run laser over the left-field wall of Mike D. Lane Field. After premiering in the ASUN last season, the four-bagger was the first of the part-time catcher's college career.Â
Playing first base all weekend, Logan Fink most likely hit the longest home run of the weekend. Three innings after Hassan hit his, the redshirt freshman slammed a moonshot for his second RBI of the game and his first career home run.Â
Matt Thompson will look to get in on the action Tuesday, starting his first game as an Owl after not pitching at all this season. The six-foot-three rightie last pitched for South Georgia State in 2019, finishing with a 4-6 record and a 3.56 ERA.
