BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Kennesaw State baseball team (7-4) was unable to complete the sweep of UAB (6-4), as the Blazers edged out the Owls in an 8-7 win on Sunday afternoon.
As the game started out at Young Memorial Field, KSU had its best top of the first inning of the weekend after scoring two runs in the frame. One-run base hits from Alex Carballo and Terence Norman pulled the Owls into an early 2-0 lead.
The home team answered back in a big way, with a five-run bottom of the first to give UAB an early advantage.
The Owls were down 6-3 by the top of the eighth inning, but their offense began to click. Gavin Patel, who started Sunday in his first-ever game in black and yellow at third base, came up to plate with the bases loaded. The redshirt sophomore pulled a pitch to left field for a two-run single; two two RBIs were the infielder's first two RBIs as an Owl.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham pitching staff began to struggle in finding the strike zone, walking Jesse Sherrill to load the bases. Consecutive walks for Tyler Tolve and Carballo would grab KSU its first lead since the first inning.
The Owls let up two runs in the bottom of the eighth off of a wild pitch and an error to surrender the lead to their adversaries; UAB narrowly avoided the sweep by taking the series finale with an 8-7 win.
