CONWAY, S.C. - The Kennesaw State baseball team fell victim to the 23rd-best team in the nation, with West Virginia winning the opening game of the Coastal Carolina University Baseball Tournament 13-3.
Mountaineer ace Jackson Wolf had an impressive showing, with the NCBWA All-American shutting out the Owls for seven innings.
Down 10-0 in the top of the eighth inning, the KSU offense got going with a Tyler Simon double down the right-field line. Jake Coro earned his first RBI of the season when he brought Simon home with a double of his own to right center.
West Virginia reliever Daniel Ouderkirk threw a wild pitch, advancing Coro to third base. Coro would score when Jesse Sherrill hit a hard ground ball to shortstop.
The Owls had plenty of work to do in order to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Garrett Hodges sent a two-out pitch over the right-field wall for his first home run of the year, but the Mountaineers closed out the game 13-3.
Kennesaw State hits the diamond again Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. to continue the CCU Baseball Tournament against Rhode Island school Bryant University.
