The Kennesaw State women's basketball team opens its 2021-22 season at home against Thomas University on Tuesday night.
The game marks the first time that new head coach Octavia Blue takes the helm of the Owls since being named the successor to Agnus Berenato on April 29.
Blue joined KSU after a successful nine-year run as an assistant coach at her alma mater, the University of Miami.
Blue shirts will be available to fans for the first-ever Kennesaw State Blue Out, celebrating Coach Blue's arrival to the Convocation Center court.
POINT GUARD AND PRESIDENT
Amani Johnson has already staked her claim as one of the best to ever don the black and gold, but her responsibilities go far beyond the blood, sweat and tears she's given on the court.
The 2021-22 ASUN Preseason All-Conference selection won the SGA Presidential Election on April 7 on a platform of "students supporting students."
Expertly balancing the roles of star basketball player and budding politician, the best playmaker in Kennesaw State's Division I history was nominated by the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaching Association) to represent the ASUN on the Student-Athlete Engagement Group on Saturday.
Johnson will hope to expand on her already-long list of accolades, which includes selections as the ASUN Conference Freshman of the Year, an appearance on the All-Conference Second Team and two All-Academic honors.
GUESS WHO'S BACK?
In the 2020-21 season, the Owls were without the fourth-highest scorer of their Division I history; on Tuesday night, she makes her return.
Alexis Poole logged a total of 1,171 points in her three seasons as a Kennesaw State player, putting her 210 points away from breaking Deandrea Sawyers' 1,380-point record. The forward has averaged 390 points per season, with her 2019-20 total of 481 being her best turnout yet.
With Blue having a reputation of coaching up post players, the Owls' head coach will hope that the six-foot-two senior will bolster what was the highest-rebounding frontcourt in the ASUN Conference last season.
NEXT GAME
After opening their season at home, the Owls will fly down Interstate-75 to attempt their first win against Georgia Tech. The matchup against the Yellow Jackets tips off on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
