KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team captured the team and individual titles at the Pinetree Intercollegiate at Pinetree Country Club on Tuesday.
"Magical day on the golf course today for our team," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "We knew it would be a challenging day in contention against Arkansas State. The front nine was playing tough and we were holding our own but the guys stepped on the gas and made a 17-shot improvement on the back nine and scored the lowest team round of the day to seal the win."
The Owls carded a 5-under round of 283 for a 3-under par total of 861 to win by eight shots over second-place Arkansas State. KSU was the only team to finish under par after 54 holes.
Brock Healy captured the individual title at 6-under par 210 for the event. Healy posted a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday. After a slow start, Healy settled down and birdied the 11
th and 16
th holes. The senior holed out and made eagle from 175 yards on the 18
th hole to seal his victory. He is the eighth different Owl in program history to capture an individual tournament title and the third KSU player to take home individual medalist honors at the Pinetree Intercollegiate. He finished the tournament with 35 pars, 10 birdies and two eagles.
Takafumi Shimoji secured a runner-up finish at 4-under par 212. He fired a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday. The junior made four birdies over his final 10 holes of the tournament. He finished tied for the team-lead with 12 birdies in the 54-hole event.
"Coming down the stretch Brock and Taka were also battling for medalist honors and on 18 Brock holed out from 175 yards for eagle," Odom said. "It was an absolutely unreal finish and we couldn't have asked for a better venue than our home course."
Lucas Mota signed for the Owls lowest round of the day at 4-under par 68. Mota made four birdies and an eagle over his final nine holes of the tournament. He finished tied for 14
th at 1-over par 217.
Luke Phillips carded his low round of the season with a 2-under par 70. The sophomore finished tied for 35
th at 9-over par 225.
Conner Rostowsky tied for 48
th at 15-over par 231.
Ryan Hines (227, +11), who entered the tournament as one of three KSU players competing as individuals tied for 41st.
Justin Kim (236, +20) finished tied for 56
th while
Joseph Byrne (261, +25) took home a tie for 61
st.
"I know this group is still hungry for the last two events of this fall," Odom added.
The Owls travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Battle at Black Creek on October 25-26 at Black Creek Golf Club.
