KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Kennesaw State men's golf opened the 2020-21 season with a strong first round at the Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Club.
 
"Wow what a day," head coach Bryant Odom said. "We started on the back and felt like we played a really solid nine knowing that the front nine is the more scoreable side with three par fives. The breeze was stronger and a different direction today than in our practice round so it was like learning the course all over again. Everyone set the tone early with some birdies after making the turn and it was like the long layoff was a distant memory. Overall, we had several guys step up and play some beautiful golf. We know what we are capable of and still so grateful to be back in competition."
 
The Owls competed for the first time in 320 days after the remainder of the 2019-20 was cancelled in March due to health concerns related to Covid-19.
 
KSU carded a 13-under par total of 275 to grab a seven-shot lead over second-place Coastal Carolina. The 275 total score is the third lowest score on a par 72 course in program history.
 
Connor Coffee recorded a 5-under par 67 to tie for the lead. After struggling on his opening nine holes, he fired a 9-under par 27 over his final nine holes including three eagles, three birdies and three pars.
 
"Connor's round might be the most incredible thing I've witnessed in coaching or as a former player," Odom said. "He was playing well but had a couple of bad breaks, then found his groove and it was really special to watch."
 
Brady Keran rolled in five birdies and 12 pars in route to a 4-under par 68. He is tied for third.
 
Brock Healy and Takafumi Shimoji are tied for eighth after both posted rounds of 2-under par 70. They combined to make seven birdies and 25 pars in their opening rounds.
 
Freshman Luke Phillips carded a 2-over par 74 in his KSU debut.
 
Preston Topper is tied for 46^th after a 6-over par 78 in the opening round.
 
The Owls will continue play with the second round of the Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate scheduled for Monday, January 25.
