KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's basketball team opened the game on a 22-3 run and never looked back, completing the season sweep of NJIT with an 85-62 victory Saturday afternoon in the KSU Convocation Center.
Six different Owls scored in double figures, led by a team-high 18 points from
Alexis Poole, while
Gabi Legister recorded a career-high 11 points
"Having six different student-athletes in double figures is great for us," said head coach
Agnus Berenato. "I felt like the first quarter was probably one of the most intense quarters we've had this year. Even though we came out a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, we ended up scoring more points than we did in the first quarter and that's the way we want to be coming into the home stretch. I'm really proud of this team."
The Owls got off to a quick 10-0 lead, with
Carlotta Gianolla scoring four points in the first 2:24.
Amani Johnson started to establish her usual pace, making a jumper and a three-pointer to make it 15-3 in favor of the Owls. With her first assist on the night, she also tallied her 100th helper of the season.
KSU went on another huge run that was ended by two successful free throws from NJIT guard Danielle Tunstall to make it 22-5. The Owls held the Highlanders to single digits in the first quarter, which ended 22-7.
NJIT began to find its footing in the second quarter, but their momentum was stifled by three trifectas from
Breanna Hoover in quick succession; her third three-pointer would capture the Owls' first 20-point lead of the night. The two squads entered the media timeout with KSU leading 35-15.
Legister made four straight free throws with 1:41 to go in the half after being fouled twice in a row. The Owls' defense was impressive all night, holding NJIT to less than 20 points in the first half. KSU would enter the locker room leading the Highlanders 41-17.
NJIT began to claw their way back into the game, going on a 9-2 run which forced Coach Berenato into a timeout to begin the second half.
The Highlanders went on to cut their deficit to 14 points with 3:55 left to go in the third quarter, tied for their lowest deficit of the half. This was quickly remedied by former ASUN Freshman of the Week
Gillian Piccolino, who drained back-to-back threes to give KSU another 20-point lead.
Poole came alive in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in the frame. A triple from NJIT would end the quarter, but the Highlanders were still down 61-44.
With a layup and two free throws to start the final quarter, Legister would claim her new career-high with 11 points. Poole continued to inflict her influence on the contest, as she sank a jumper to bring the Owls another 20-point lead.
Kennesaw State begins preparation for their final game of the regular season, a clash against Liberty on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
